We farm naturally. We don't use chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or herbicides. This means that we must use natural inputs to fertilize and build our soil. Healthy people starts with healthy food choices. Healthy food starts with healthy soil. So our focus is on building healthy soil. We use green fertilizer from on-farm animals and produce waste in our compost and vermicompost (aka worm compost or worm castings). The resulting soil created by worms has turned out to be the most nutritious fertilizer we have found to use. The results are in the produce we grow on our farm.
To grow the compost and vermicompost mass we will need to turn to outside inputs. That means that we are starting to look for sources of green waste, particularly green produce and coffee waste. I think we could make a great relationship with restaurants and coffee shops who want to close their waste streams. Instead of throwing coffee ground and produce waste into the landfill, together we can reduce the waste that is typically tossed into the trash bin while transforming those waste streams back into nutrients for vegetable growth and production.
We are currently looking for partnerships with local restaurants, coffee houses, and grocers to reduce or eliminate food waste streams by providing sanitary pick-up bins for these waste streams. We'll come by weekly, just like the trash pick up, and remove the waste for our on-farm composting operations. If you are a business owner or manager with green waste streams and want to reduce your landfill impact, please contact us to see how we can help each other.
